Kid’s Books For Valentine’s Day (That Celebrate All Types of Love)

We are knee deep in the second round of lockdowns here in Ontario and although it has been starting to weigh a little heavy on me, I have been trying to focus on the little joys by creating meaningful memories for Mabel, no matter how small or insignificant they feel. It has helped keep our spirits up as we push through these often lonely winter months.

In the spirit of that, I have decided that we are going to go all out for Valentine’s Day this year! Is it a random and silly holiday? Sure. But I have also always been a fan of celebrating the day of love. This year, I have so many ideas for crafts to do, treats to make, and simple activities we can do, only made better by the fact that my daughter can actually participate in it all. I am so excited for all of it.

Growing up, my mom always left us a little Valentine on the table when we came down in the morning and I can’t wait to carry that tradition on with Mabel. Since there aren’t many stores open right now, I decided to start my search for some special Valentines treats early to account for the time it may take to ship or pick-up. Which brings me here – I decided to compile a little collection of kid books that would make an adorable Valentine for the little ones in your life without being exclusively Valentine-themed. A few of these are favourites that we already have and enjoy and a few are some that we are hoping to add to our collection one day. They all celebrate love in its many beautiful forms!

  1. Bunny-Roo, I Love You* and Bunny-Roo and Duckling Too.* The original book is the sweetest little story about how much a parent loves their baby with the most beautiful illustrations you can imagine. Mabel still loves this story, so I would love to add the second book (which I think is geared towards the toddler experience) to our collection one day too.

  2. Part Of My Heart.* We haven’t actually read this one yet, but I have only seen great reviews. It explores the special love between parents that create a child and expresses it in a way that a pre-schooler can understand. Ultimately, it celebrates family, which I think this is one of the best forms of love to celebrate with your child. This is one of the books I ordered for Mabel’s Valentine surprise. (Update: I didn’t realize that this was a self-published book. It’s a pretty cute book, but not the most professional in the printing and binding. Just wanted to put that out there.)

  3. Wherever You Are: My Love Will Find You.* This one may make you cry. It is such a touching book about the love one feels for their child, which I think ultimately creates a beautiful metaphor for the love that God has for all of us. The illustrations are also stunning and involve lots of animal characters, which Mabel loves to point out and enjoy.

  4. Love Makes A Family.* Another adorable celebration of the love within a family. We don’t personally own this book, but we do have another book by this author and it has been one of our favourite books to read together. The illustrations are colourful and fun, making it a great read for little eyes.

  5. I’ll Love You Till The Cows Come Home.* This is admittedly another book we haven’t read, but I was sold on the illustrations alone (why am I always a sucker for the illustrations?) This is the second book I ordered to include in Mabel’s Valentine surprise.

  6. Guess How Much I Love You. A classic book in a special pink edition just to give you all the extra warm lovey feelings.

  7. The Love Letter.* I have only heard great things about this sweet tale involving a few forest friends and an anonymous love letter. It celebrates the power of a little bit of love in a great big world. We will definitely be adding this one into the rotation eventually.

  8. The World Needs Who You Were Made To Be.* I don’t think it is ever too early to introduce our children to the idea of self-love and acceptance. I think this is a great book to help do just that by showing our children that their individual strengths play a part in the big picture of helping to make the world a better place.

  9. What’s Up, Maloo?*This book explores the power of friendship as we navigate life’s challenges. I think that friendship is such an important form of love and this beautifully illustrated book is the perfect picture of how important it is to have (and be!) a loving friend.

  10. Let’s Say I Love You.* This book is so cute! It teaches you and your child how to say I love you in twelve different languages. Love is universal, after all!

Do you have a favourite book that so beautifully represents love in any of its many forms? Do you think you will add any of these titles to your collection? Regardless of how you celebrate, I hope you have a perfectly sweet Valentine’s Day this year and feel all the extra love you may need.
